Prof Ian Jones is a recently retired Professor of Psychiatry at the Division of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences at Cardiff University. For a decade he was Director of the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH.info) and with colleagues lead the Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN.org). He was the clinical lead for the Cardiff University Psychiatry Service (CUPS) and lead a clinical service offering pre-conception counselling to women with severe mental illness. He was director of BEP-C, a group psychoeducation programme for bipolar disorder which received the British Medical Journal (BMJ) award for innovation in medicine.
In addition to being a trustee for the MMHA Ian is a trustee, past chair and scientific adviser to Action on Postpartum Psychosis and clinical advisor to Bipolar UK. He was deputy chair of the Perinatal Faculty, Royal College of Psychiatrists, President of the UK and Ireland Marcé Society and was a member of the Clinical Guideline Group for the NICE Antenatal and Postnatal Mental Health Guidelines.
His research focuses on bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis. He has authored or co-authored over 400 publications and book chapters.
He has been awarded both the Marcé Medal and the John Cox Medal for his perinatal mental health research and was named Academic Psychiatrist of the Year at the RCPsych Awards.
